These used to come in two flavors. Fossilized, and straight mammoth ivory. I believe these are at least partially fossilized. I will admit I have used Elephant Ivory (pre-ban) on antique instruments and still have some blanks. This mammoth ivory is harder, and makes for a bright but still warm sound on acoustics. You do not have the legal liabilities with this material, and the saddles and bridge pins really improve the tone, or alter it, as tone is subject to individual taste(s). The Allparts MI works well with tools, and sounds great for bluegrass. I wish they had large saddle blanks for wide compensation, or retrofitting the 60/61 Gibson bird bridges that have a height adjustment with 2 screws. This works in most other applications very well. These and the bridge pins really make a Martin D-28 stand out in the mix, and compete with the piercing tones of mandos and banjos!
